This is Earl Ray "Doc" Holliday from Ramona, Oklahoma.  I served on the Vega from October 1963 to January 1965 in the 2nd division under Jon Deacon, Holtzhowzer, David and Hartley, Boatswain mates.  And,Bill Watts,Jones, Foster, Obie, Dale Johnson and others I scraped paint with. I went to Vietnam for CHB-2 and I was there for over 13 months after training for 6 months.  And then I served 3 months aboard the USS Navasota, an oiler, and then I was discharged.    I have a lot of good memories, and I have no regrets.  Anyone remembers me, please email me at:  EarlRayHolliday@gmail.com   or call me at:  (918) 440-6826 . . . and Storkan . . . . I still wouldn't get your damn coffee! Doc

USS Vega sailors:   Just a quick not to wish all a day of fond memories of your service aboard the USS Vega, AF59.  It is Memorial Day and a day to remember all that served and are no longer with us. Thanks for supporting the reunion.
Ray George,  TE-3    rgeorge@zoomtown.com

I served on the Vega as a Fire Control Technician, FTG3 from 1965 through 1968.  Those were the good old days, though I didn’t appreciate them then.  I sure do now.
One of the more memorable things that happened on one of my Westpac cruises was that one of our shipmates disappeared.  I believe that his name was Bell.  I think he worked below decks in the engine room.   As I remember it, one morning at muster he couldn’t be found.  A heavy chain normally found on the fantail was missing.  The story I remember hearing was that Bell was having some kind of personal problems.  We never heard any more details than that.
I now live 20 miles from my Gunnery Division buddy, Virgil Sullard.  I’ve also gotten in contact with another gunnery division buddy named Dwain Stine who lives near Denver.   I’ve found that if you can recall a shipmates name and you know the state / city your buddy was from, you can probably get in contact with him   using the Internet.  It takes some digging but patience pays off.  --- I would like to know what happened to my gunnery division buddy named Ralph.  I can’t recall his last name.  Once when he was on watch in after steering, he accidentally cut the tip off of his index finger.  Sometime later, he volunteered for Vietnam PBR duty.  I hope you’re still out there Ralph.
Also, to Mr. Hagdorn, who was my Division Officer and who rightly didn’t like me, I wish that I had been a little more mature then.  Thankfully, with age has come maturity.

I served aboard the best feeder in the Navy from Oct 69 until I got out  in Jan 72. It was the best of times and the worst of times. (mostly good). I look forward to seeing old shipmates and meeting new ones.

Hello Former Shipmates,

EN2 McClure here.

I served on the USS Vega from December 1973 to April 27, 1977 starting out on the Refer Room and ended up in the Hydro Shop in A Division.  Great times!

To all my great friends I met on the Vega, David Loden, David Swaim, John Patrick Joseph Donlin, John Fuller, Doug Decker, Strawberry, Bill Pierce, Paul Huber, Massey, Gabe Varela, Pete Petersen, Mr. Ambrusse (SP) and Mr. Root just to name a few, thanks for all the great times.  It was the only ship I served on, but from what I have read, it must have been the best.

All the great ports we were in, Subic Bay, Hong Kong, Okinawa, Cebu, Tiawan, Singapore, Pearl Harbor, just to name a few.

Then there was the SS MAYAGUEZ incident and helping out all the refuges fleeing from SE Asia.

As it looks right now, I will not be able to attend the reunion in July 2010 as I am in the IAARNG and will be attending AT at that time.  This is the second time this has happened to me, so maybe it is time to retire from the military!

Blessings to all.

I served on the Vega from May of 1967 to Jun of 1971. I started on the deck force as a seaman, became a leading seaman during transfers, went into the deck office and became a personelman PN3 before transferring to Great Lakes to finish my Navy life in Mar of 1971. The ship was on station when the Pueblo was taken as well as our spy plane was shot down. I was a helmsman during GQ, transfers and moving in and out of ports of call. We were there when the New Jersey was turned around just one day out of the states to be on site because of the Pueblo. We transferred all of our food to the New Jersey in Yokosuka, Japan before reloading and heading to station.

We were on maneuvers off Manila when the US destroyer Evans (not sure of the name) was cut in half like a knife by the Australian aircraft carrier. The back end was towed in and the surviving sailors had great and sad stories of bravery and heroics .

I may have some pictures and will send them in once I look them up. Many good memories of activities on the Vega.
  Can be reached at donslager@comcast.com

Will be retiring in Jan of 2010

Hello Crew,
I am David Taylor from King, North Carolina. Went on the Vega in 65, left in 67, on  to Nam on PBR gunboats.  As I look back it was some of the best days of my life.  Oh to be 18 or 20 again!  Oh well. . .

I was a machine mate E3 when I come aboard in 1970. Started out with the bts then when to A gang. Got some great pictures if I can figure out how to load them.  One good friend can not seem to find, Tom Sanders.  Went to West Pac. It is truly a great ship to be on.  When we got back from West Pac, had to have foot surgery in Subic Bay. Got gangrene. Got MEDVAC to States.   Never got a chance to say good bye to friends.  Great web site.

Re: Agent Orange.

My best guess of the occasion that my husband speaks of must be October 1, 1966 thru October 6, 1966. I make this guess because I found the misc. paperwork on the Vega web site; his name listed on "SPECIAL PAY FOR SUBJECT TO HOSTILE FIRE" I am the one assuming that this is the time in a lagoon, he was warned of sniper fire.

The other specific incident that might jog someone else's memory, is when the ship was so close to shore, that it ran aground, got stuck and had to wait for the tide to come in deep enough to float the Vega free. Another time the ship became entangled in a kelp bed and was stranded until Navy divers could free the Vega from the Kelp.

Perhaps someone would remember this in a diary or for some reason remember those dates, proving the Vega was more than just out at sea off of Vietnam.

He remembers being in a lagoon, like a bay, standing on the side of the Vega with a machine gun, in case the (San Pan?) boats came too close, as the transfer of not so fresh vegetables were given to the Swift boats. The Vega was approx. 1000 yards off shore and could see the Vietnamese farming and working the fields. One specific time he was sprayed he was outside of the signal shack, with Bruce Webb, and lookouts screamed "Bogie! Bogie! They were looking up thinking it could be an enemy plane, as it came over spraying agent orange, then the order over the loud speaker came to go inside, that Agent Orange was being sprayed. Well, it was too late, he felt the dampness on his face and inhaled the stuff.

One time straight across from Hanoi the Vega picked up two men off the shore, they were placed in the officers quarters, no one was allowed to even speak to them.

You see, my problem with the VA is that they want proof that Robert J. Ross was on the VEGA AF-59 when it was docked or near enough land that he was indeed exposed to Agent Orange. Any way that is what I am being told that we need to show.

I appreciate everyone's help, and any information will help.

It is fine with us for our names and email to be passed on to anyone that can help us. (Robert J. Ross SFM3)

TIME ABOARD THE VEGA BOAT!
Robinson, 'ROBBIE' or 'ROB', MSSN,  Yeah, I helped feed a lot of the crew on the VEGA BOAT from 1974 until we got decommissioned in Mare Island CA. in 1977.  Made two Wes Pac cruises in 1975 and 1976 with a good crew. I remember Ben the cook, Brown the cook, Saulo the cook, Squirrell and Keith Ford deck crew, Moody and Gay in the laundry and babers: Ricky Newton, Big Dave, John Woo, Legget, Alfred (last name), Captain Brown, Mater Chief Harrison, Davis, GM3, and JOHN TIRADO.  I did a lot of night baking for you guys when you came back in from liberty.

Email: robinson3707@sbcglobal.net
I served aboard the Vega from December 1974 to March 1977 as Admin Officer, 1st Division Officer, Asst. 1st LT, and Gunnery Officer.

I’d like to second MA1 Haley’s comments about BMCM Harrison.  He was the best Master Chief I met during my 20 years of active and reserve duty.

I was serving with NRMTF Puget Sound when the Vega was in Tacoma and saw it each month when I came to drill.  It was sad to see the lady who had served our country so well for many years in such a sad state. There were many great people I served with on the Vega as a green officer.  I learned a lot about leadership and what it meant to be a good shipmate.

Thanks, for the great website and hopefully we can get some more pictures online.  I know I’ll be looking for mine.

H. Dean Rhodes, LCDR, USNR-R      Email: hdrhodes@mindspring.com

Served on the Vega from early '76 to decommissioning in '77 as an EMFN.  I had many good times and made many good friends (Ron Granlund, Marty London, Bill Pierce, Mark Jolly, David Swaim, Steve Edmison, James Root, Chief Tennant, and even Wellington Dean Bond III).  My first WestPac was Vega's final WestPac.  I went to the Enterprise following her decommissioning.  I saw the ship for the last time at the Tacoma waterfront in the early 80's, after she had spent many years as a fish processor, when she was being stripped for salvage.  I was driving to work one day, saw that silhouette, and knew right away that it was the Vega.  She was a good boat and I am glad for the time that I spent aboard.

Todd Bull Spotcruiser@aol.com

I caught up with the Vega around the beginning of April, 1975, and remained as part of the crew until the day of her decommissioning. During that time I made some lifelong friends: Mac - an EN2, DW - an MM2, and Gabe - an IC1 & my mentor (Gabe passed away in 2007). Finishing out that Westpac and the one the next year, I had a chance to experience things that I probably would never have experienced otherwise. One thing that stands out in my mind is the way her crew worked together to get things done.  After she was decommissioned I was sent to my second (and last) ship which happened to be an AE, things were just not the same there. To this day (more than 30 years later) I feel proud to have been part of the Vega crew.

Many thanks to Lyle for this web site.

Just a note on 2 old ship mates. After leaving the Vega August 1966 I stay in the reserves and ran into JB at the Washington Navy Yard during a reserve drill I guess this was about 1970. As for Dan Cissell never forget his face. When I first came aboard the Vega I remember standing in the chow line and there was Dan blinking his eyes as he was sending a message in Morse code.
Two good ship mates. I remember Dan always in a clean work uniform. I was on the deck force and of course our uniform was always a little ragged. I wanted to be in a clean uniform so I learned Flashing light and Semaphore at night. Soon after that the ships navigator asked if I wanted to be a signalmen he didn’t have to ask twice, this was my chance to be as clean as Dan.

MA1 Patrick D. Haley USS Vega (AF-59) 1974 until Decommissioning    21 September 2007

What a ship to serve on!!!! I transferred to the USS Vega in 1974. I was previously attached to the USS Midway. As I walked up the pier at the Oakland Supply Center I was moved aback by this ship. It was nothing like I thought it would be. There was rust running down the side, it was dirty and looked as if it had had better days. As I checked on board the ship I was further shocked by the appearance of the topside equipment. The decks were dirty, machinery was dirty, in fact the whole ship was dirty!!!  I was new to the navy, only two years in and a deck seaman. I didn't figure that being a side cleaner on the USS Midway would automatically translate into being a side cleaner on the Vega.
As I finished checking in I was met by the Watch Messenger, SN Mike Barrett who escorted me to the 2nd Division (Deck Department) berthing quarters. I was assigned a bunk and was then led to the Master Chiefs office. The Master Chief I met was no other than BMCM James Harrison. Mind you I'm 6'4 tall. Master Chief Harrison couldn't have been over 5'8 tall. He reminded me of a Blach Lee Marvin with the same attitude.  From the moment I met him he became the most intimidating person I ever met in my short life. Master Chief Harrisons' first words to me were Your a big M.F. Young Bird. How do ya like belong on a working ship? Before I could answer him he sent me away to the 1st Lt Office. I can't remember his name but he kept me from going to Captains Mast on several occasions due to fighting and partying etc....
I then got the tour of the ship. I learned this was a working ship, and I learned very well. Until the day the ship was put to rest she worked hard. Her crew worked hard and played hard. I remember many days of 36 hour underway replenishments followed by long watches. I remember bitching and moaning about the job, the hours, and the Master Chief. This was a continued conversation but it also led to a brotherhood that I don't think any other man could have accomplished.
Master Chief Harrison was an intimidating man but also a very smart man. He put together a great deck Department. Oh probably by any other standard we could have been labeled malcontents, lazy, shiftless. We were undermanned and everyone contributed to the mission of the ship. Radiomen were assigned as phone talkers and it seemed as though everyone was a line handler. We delivered groceries. Rain or shine we worked and worked until the job was finished. The USS Vega had a personality of her own. She brought out the best in everyone including me. I will miss this ship and the men who served in her. During the years I served on four other ships and various shore commands.
I retired in 1993 and consider the USS Vega the best ship served aboard. Thank you USS Vega and the Officers and Men who served in her.

I also send my regards to Michael Barrett, Mihael Latorre, Ron Stanford, and Randy Solomon.

Marty Ort, Sunday 16 September 2007
My Name is Marty Ort. In Sept. or Oct. (1965) (its been a long time!) I was on the Vega on route to my Carrier USS. I was 18 at the time. I was an airdale guy. We left Subic Bay and replenish several ships then went on to Da Nang Harbor.

After we left, we finally got to the USS Coral Sea then I was High lined over to it.

My memories are: It was an air conditioned ship, it had a crew of only 90, we went swimming in the ocean, crews quarters were excellent, movies outside on deck, food was fine and we were treated well.

Thanks for the ride!

I reported onboard the VEGA while she was in a civilian shipyard in Oakland/Alameda area.  Reported during the month of September 1963.  I was an SK3 and got assigned to S1 Division where I took on the job of handling the Ship’s OPTAR.  I remember the many nights that I had to work late to balance the OPTAR books and was not able to go on liberty until they were balanced.  I enjoyed the many good liberty ports that we hit.
I remember the trip where we took what some claimed to be a 30 plus degree roll while we were riding out a bad storm.  Our decks were loaded with tons of lumber.  We had one guy who fell out of his bunk and broke one of his arms.
I left the ship in 1966 as an SK2, and made SK1 while in transit to my next duty station (PreComm Detail for the NIAGARA FALLS AFS3).  VEGA was a good ship and a hell of a good feeder.  I remember the 1900 Hamburger/Hot Dog feeds while we were underway.   I have one very fond memory of the time on board.
On 8 July 1966 I was transferred by manila highline to the Oriskany (CVA34).  When the BMC (maybe BMCS) told the line crew to lay back on the line, all of a sudden, the whole Supply Department jumped on the line to make sure that I would not be dipped.  I was in tears the whole way over to the Big O.
If I could meet any of those guys now I would be tongue tied still to this day. Would appreciate hearing from anyone that remembers me and would like to hash over any of our time together.

I served on the Vega the last nine months of my four year enlistment in the Navy -- March 1964 through December 1964.  Worked in the Ship's Office as a YN2 with Jimmie Williams, PN3 and Bill Journey, PNSN.  I remember Moeller, DKSN, Kraft, DK3, Postal Peters, Manues, RM2, and Matthews, ET3.  Really enjoyed the Westpac Cruise during the Fall of 1964; also remember the severe storm we weathered on the way to Japan with a load of lumber.  I think I was the only Cajun from New Orleans, LA on the ship at the time.  Had a great time on the Vega and met some of the best people I have ever known in my life.  Hope to hear from some of the old shipmates.

Reported aboard U.S.S. Vega (AF-59) December 1960 as SA USNR and was assigned to 1st Division.  Worked on Deck Force for approximately 9 months, then transferred to Operations Division as Seaman Electronics Technician striker.  Attended 6 weeks of ETA school at Treasure Island then joined ET gang.  Served aboard until September 1963 when transferred to U.S.S. Genesee (AOG-8) as ETN3 USNR, in Subic Bay, Philippines.

This was beginning of 21 year Naval Career that included duty at NavShipRepFac, Yokosuka; U.S.S. Somers (DDG-34), Long Beach; Cryptographic Repair School, Mare Island; Defense Language Institute, Arlington; Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado; Coastal Surveillance Center, Vung Tau; Naval Advisory Unit, Cat Lo; Mobile Technical Unit 7, Yokosuka; and finally Advanced Electronics Schools Department, San Diego from which I retired as ETCS, USN.

Vega was in many ways the most interesting of all subsequent duty assignments and the crew the most colorful and adventurous group of sailors one could hope to be a member of.  Many, many memories of incredibly good times, and some moments of sorrow also.  BM3 Corbman was killed aboard while ship was entering Subic Bay during rainstorm - he was on the Boat Davit ladder attempting to release latch at bow of anchor detail boat when it broke loose and fell forward impaling him on the ladder.

During personnel inspection in Yokosuka, Japan, MM3 Schraut passed out and was later transferred to Naval Hospital, Oakland, for treatment; remaining there many months until he finally passed away from heart failure.

I was on Vega 1974-1975.  She was my last duty station before transfering to Fleet Reserve and retirement.  I guess it is true about the best duty station is your last.  Any way, it worked out that way for me.  The Vega's 1975 WESTPAC deployment brought her into the middle of history.  I believe it is not the ship that makes a duty station great, but the crew.  I am proud to have served with the men and officers of the Vega in 1975.  Both ship and crew were MAGNIFICENT! Those of you I served with were wonderfully professional and great  shipmates.  I remember you fondly and pray the years have been kind to you.
Sincerely,  RMC Dewey D. Neufeld, Operations Chief

My second ship, but definitely my best ship.  By the way, being an RM2 aboard from Nov 1964 thru April 1966, Vega's voice call sign was changed in 1965 from Thunderbolt "Mike" to Soiled Spar.  None of us liked it, but, it was changed.  I stayed with the Navy, finally retiring as a DSCM in 1988 (4 ships and another remote island after the Vega.  Still consider her Number 1 for duty!
oops. . . guess the memory is going. . . it was from 1963 to 1965 I was aboard the Vega.  and it was in 1964 that they changed the call sign.  I was aboard when Ernie Glashaw (ETR2) and ETN3 Mathews was aboard.  Chief Ivy was the RMC I worked for and RM1 Willie Ray Briggs was the LPO for the radiomen.  Memories are coming back!

My first ship, served along with two brothers during 1961-63 at same time. Many fond and wonderous memories remain. After 30 years I can still honestly say that Vega was the most rewarding with some tough but honest individuals.  At the time I was onboard there also was two other set of brothers at the same time.  I remember one set's last name was Happy and they were from Texas.  Bud Happy worked with me in the engine room for a MM3 McPhail.
As I look back over this site more good thoughts come to life, and the many weekends we spent doing things for which today they would lock us up and throw-away the key. I still have the wonderful set of recipe card's in the wooden box for portions of 100, presented to my new bride as a gift from Dick Conhiser upon settling in our apartment in Alemeda, which many of the crew used as their locker change room back when civvies where not allowed aboard ship.
Thanks for this Web Site, and hope that many of the shipmates are still around and enjoying life and good health.
